What is the age requirement for enrollment?
You would need to meet the enrollment criteria of 19 years of age or 18 and out of the high school system for one full year.
Is there a wait list for the ABE program?
Students can start the program at anytime as we have a continuous intake, meaning that there are no set start dates and no wait lists.
Is there funding available to enroll in the ABE Program?
Funding may be available under the Department of Human Resources, Labour & Employment – LMDA Division to attend the program. To meet the criteria for funding students would need to be in receipt of EI or have received EI over the last 3 years (5 years for maternity/paternity benefits). A student would need to check with LMDA to secure funding.
Can I pay to attend the program myself? What is the cost?
If a student wishes to pay on their own the fee is based on a per day rate. Please contact the school for further details.
What is the class schedule?
The Discovery Centre is open year round. Classes usually run from Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm, but may vary by campus.
How is the ABE program delivered at the Discovery Centre?
The ABE program is delivered at our centers using the following two teaching methods:
General classroom – This is a self paced environment where students work on their individualized program with the guidance and support of the instructors.
Lecture class - teacher lead, please note this is offered on a demand basis.
How do I apply to enroll at the Discovery Centre?
There is no application to fill out. At the Discovery Centre we have an initial interview process for enrollment, please contact one of our campuses if you require further details or if you would like to set up an appointment.
What if I need 6 or less credits on my high school transcript?
You may qualify to transfer your ABE credits back to high school to meet high school graduation requirements. We would handle the necessary correspondence to the Department of Education to determine if this is possible.
What if I am from outside the province of Newfoundland & Labrador?
Students from outside the province must submit a transcript for transfer into the ABE program.
What if I am already a high school graduate and only need to upgrade?
You can enroll in the ABE program and upgrade either your academic subjects or skill levels. This can be done for one or multiple subject/skill areas. All academic Math, Science and English subjects are available.
How long does it take to complete ABE?
The time it takes to complete ABE varies depending on the number of credits required for graduation.
